run over

I have not disappeared.  Last Saturday afternoon I stopped by the barn to put Nina's blanket on and as I was leaving I got blindsided by a loose horse.  I was standing in an aisle at the barn, waiting for a couple of horses being led to walk past so that I could cross the 10 feet or so to my car when I was hit in the back by a running loose horse.  I never saw or heard him coming.  I think he was trying to duck between the 2 horses being led and the fence and there I was.
I was knocked out cold and woke up in an ambulance.  When I figured out where I was I was a little pissed off, since I was thinking about stopping at the grocery and then going home.  The paramedics knew what had happened and described it to me.  I still don't remember it.  Waiting to get in my car....waking up in ambulance.  Saturday sucked.
I spent 5 days in the hospital with an interesting concussion and amazingly, except for the back of my skull, no broken bones.  My face and neck are black and blue, swollen and will be interesting colors for weeks.  I am sore all over, no prominent hoof marks.
I think I was incredibly unlucky to manage to get run over by a horse that I never even saw, and incredibly lucky to have survived it, especially with minor injuries.
So - how was your Saturday?

  5. OMG!!! I am so glad you are okay! It's probably a good thing you don't remember it. How horrible!

I know it sounds strange, but I wondered if Nina saw it all?

Sounds like you are going to be on the mend for a while. Take it easy. Your angels must have been watching out for you. That could have been deadly!

You're in my thoughts and prayers.

  8. I really hope you are starting to feel better. The strength of a horse crashing into you is something I can only imagine.

  9. Oof, sounds like it hurt! My god, thank goodness you're alright. One of the most accurate statements I think I've ever heard is that the majority of bad accidents don't happen when you're on the horse, its when you're on the ground. If you're not a part of the horse world, you don't really hear about it. You hear about the Christopher Reeve's of the world, but when you're a part of that world, that's when you hear about the lady who got trampled and killed by her stallion, the guy who didn't turn his horse around before letting him loose, and ended up with a fatal kick to the head, or the horse that bolted to the side... into their handler.
    Hope you're feeling better soon!

  10. Good heavens, I just found your blog and now this! I am so glad you're going to be okay. That was some scary accident! I think Kate is right. The worst wrecks I personally know of did come on the ground. My friend's giant WB sprang sidewise when startled, knocking her down, and managed to stomp on her head. Her jaw was badly broken. Another girl was leading her mare, who spun around and nailed her in the head with a hind hoof. She was REALLY lucky; she had a severe concussion and broken bones (cheek and eye socket) but no permanent damage. So I try to be extra-careful nowadays! They are flight-prone animals...Again, glad you will be okay. Take care.

  11. So glad you're ok, but ugh, five whole days in a hospital? I'll call that a HUGE pain in the a#!. Seriously...if you have to be hurt by horses, it's almost worse when it's not your own-and you literally could not have done anything to prevent it. THAT is bad luck...hope you're feeling 100% soon.

  12. Oh my goodness!!! That is so scary! And if you were in the hospital for 5 days it really is a miracle that you are okay. I hope that you are starting to feel better! I know you will be out of the tack for a while so try and enjoy your time off. So scary...I am glad you are okay!
